Vacuum those high traffic areas more frequently.  By getting dirt up quickly, it has less opportunity to be ground into the carpet fiber.

Slow down.  If you vacuum slower with overlapping strokes, you are letting your vacuum do what is intended and suck up all the dirt and debris.

When you spot, blot it.  And do so quickly! By soaking up the liquid as soon as it’s spilled, you may prevent it from soaking into the fibers.
